Naval Vanguards Assemble!

In coming up with ideas for heroes for the Naval Vanguard initiative, we look to the public domain, and also draw inspiration from the public domain and the unused characters at the bottom of the toy box who are long overdue for a retcon and update as the grand children and great grand children of the 20th Century's long forgotten heroes. In addition to the legacy heirs of yesterday's generic heroes are the legacy heirs of the generic villians and heroes (for some, like The Spider Queen, will definitely be switching sides). The key to making all these characters worthy of inclusion will be their backstory and making them realistically fit into a 21st Century technological driven world, much like Luz, The Spider Queen, and the new Blue Bolt are being designed to fit in to the real world where both magic and technology collide.

The Naval Vanguard Initiative

The Naval Research Laboratories' Vanguard Initiative is a high level classified "super soldier" program that was launched in 2029 with the mission to research and develop future Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps equipment, weapons and body armors. The program is designed to investigate various futuristic technologies, including strength enhancement and mind boosting drugs, powered exoskeletons, unconventional undersea and oceanic war-fighting technologies, and artificially intelligent assistants.

Naval Legends and Myths...

Commander Marvel
The first Naval Vanguard!

In restarting the DC movie universe, James Gunn has named the opening sequence of shows and movies "Gods and Monsters."  Well, in starting our own little fictional comic universe we have decided to term our opening set of stories as "Naval Legends and Myths," in which our own heroes, both original and from the vast universe known as the comic book public domain, are introduced here, via our website. All of our stories will be written with the assistance of artificial intelligence, which we believe is a useful tool to content creators, writers and artists.

Ultimately though, the final product will be human and not something solely computer generated.  Just like how computers help create crisp animated images, so to can computers help create more imaginative plot lines.  In Naval Legends and Myths we are introduced to the team of heroes of Earth 2069, where the heroes and villians of old, like the Blue Bolt, Captain Midnight and the Spider Queen are paired with younger aspiring heroes like Commander Marvel, Knightshade, Lady Spitfyre, and Swallow.

The Escapists: Chapter 1- Superman's Ghost

With the new Superman trailer dropping this past week, the Escapists- Commander Marvel (Greg) and Knight Shade (Matt) sit down and talk about it and the Man of Steel in general, from his comic beginnings in the 30s, to his TV portrayal by George Reeves in the 50s, to his multiple origin stories on the big and small screen. The question for them, and for comic book movie fans around the world at large, is, to paraphrase Don Mclean in his song "Superman's Ghost," though the the image persists in the video mists, when the movie is released, will a Superman really be there?"

The Escapists: Chapter 0- Origins

Every superhero has an origin story, as does every fanboy... In their first Navy Comics live stream, the Escapists sit down and talk about their love of comics and how they came to be fans of the comic book genre.

"Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! Well, not really, its just two dudes living in ancient Asian kingdom where robots and artificial intelligence are moving away from the stuff of science fiction and into the everyday reality of life. And what is this ancient kingdom you ask? Well, you tell us! All we want to say now is that we live in nerd heaven where animation and comics are king. But being in nerd heaven doesn't mean we are oblivious of reality, and for us, comics and all things that surround the genre, are a perfect escape from the cruel realities of everyday life.

Why Superheroes Don't Serve in the Navy

Marvel and DC superheroes have joined the US Army, Air Force, and the Marines - but never the Navy, and there's a very good reason why...

by Joshua Isaak at screenrant.com

The following is an article from Screen Rant that asks the hard question of why no Navy heroes? This article formed the basis of my motivation to create a Navy themed hero is that there aren't any real Navy based heroes. Aquaman does not count as he never served in the Navy, nor does Namor.  In essence what the lead public domain character Commander Marvel is here at Navy Comics, is a hybrid hero the sea service can call its very own who is similar in origin to that of other patriotic heroes, including the Shield (the first Star Spangled hero), Soldier Boy, Captain America, Captain Commando, Commander Steel, Captain Flag, etc.; but with a touch of magic thrown in, like Captain Marvel, and all in the guise of a geeky Lt. Commander who aced the naval 0-4 exam and is now in charge of a rag tag group of misfit 21st Century sailors, soldiers, airmen, marines, and guardians with the Sea Marvels Project tasked to protect the world from sea born threats from mad scientists, aliens, and other rogues.

The First Naval Avenger

 The Navy's Crackerjack Superhero

First appearing in the comic section in 1934, Don Winslow of the Navy would enjoy a two-decade run thrilling audiences, warning Americans about international threats, and spurring naval recruitment.
